Czech Republic in danger of losing its EU commissioner
Proposals that EU countries that boycott the Treaty of Lisbon should lose their EU commissioner are doing the rounds in Brussels. Since Czech President Václav Klaus has so far refused to ratify the treaty the left-leaning daily Právo sees the Czech Republic’s commissioner in jeopardy: “Should the Irish ratify the treaty on October 2, Polish President Lech Kaczynski also intends to sign it. And the German president is also likely to ratify the treaty. He will be free to do so once the parliament adopts a law stipulating that it must be consulted before further competencies are transferred to Brussels. This law will probably be passed by the end of September. This means the Czech Republic is likely to be the only country left that hasn’t ratified Lisbon and it will make us an easy target when it comes to deciding which country will no longer have an EU commissioner.” (29/07/2009)
