Du 7 au 9 septembre, le Président ukrainien Viktor Iouchtchenko était en Pologne pour une visite officielle de deux jours. Il a rencontré le Président polonais Lech Kaczynski ainsi que le Premier ministre polonais Donald Tusk afin de discuter en priorité de l’adhésion de l’Ukraine à l’Union européenne, que M. Tusk a assuré soutenir, tout comme l’adhésion de ce pays à l’OTAN. Les questions de sécurité énergétique ont également été à l’ordre du jour; en particulier, la construction d’un oléoduc du port d’Odessa à Gdansk a été évoquée. Les deux chefs d’État ont également adopté une feuille de route pour la préparation de l’Euro 2012 que les deux pays co-organisent.

Polish–Ukrainian cooperation, European aspirations of Ukraine, policies related to history, and questions of energy safety are the main subjects discussed by the President of the Council of Ministers Donald Tusk with the President of Ukraine Viktor Yushchenko.
The head of the Polish government found “the Polish–Ukrainian relations exemplary”. The foundation for the good relations is the amity between the two nations, interest in cooperation in a variety of fields, and the benefits that it brings. The areas of Polish–Ukrainian cooperation mentioned included economic and cultural matters, as well as cooperation in education and the matters of energy safety.
The politicians also discussed the shared history of Poland and Ukraine. They agreed that the relations between the two states must be built on the grounds of truth. The head of the Polish government emphasised that the two countries should care for a balance between the questions of the past and the challenges of the future. “Our nations are great, and do not have to fear building the future on foundations of truth,” said Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
Mentioned during the meeting was the question of Polish–Ukrainian relations in the context of Ukraine’s bid for accessing the European Union. Prime Minister Tusk ensured that there is support for Ukraine’s European aspirations.
The politicians discussed also the current economic situation in Europe and prospects for going out of the economic crisis.
