Adam Michnik: Free Yulia Tymoshenko:

On behalf of Gazeta Wyborcza I add my voice to the universal appeals for the release of Yulia Tymoshenko and other Ukrainian political prisoners.

President Yanukovych has compromised independent Ukraine. It was not difficult to predict that the imprisonment and torture of Yulia Tymoshenko would encounter sharp criticism from countries of the democratic West.

A politician who is destroying the image of his own country in the eyes of the world and who, against the wishes of a large percentage of his own people, is replacing the strength of argument in political dispute with the argument of force is digging his own political grave. What is more, he is harming his own people.

The Ukrainian people have not deserved this.

Public opinion in democratic countries has reacted, following many diplomatic interventions, in a correct manner. The imprisonment of Yulia Tymoshenko and other leading figures of Ukraine’s democracy has been condemned in terms clear to President Yanukovych and to the entire world.

We Poles can understand very well Germany’s President Joachim Gauck who has no wish to shake President Yanukovych’s hand when the latter is torturing the leader of a major opposition party.

We are aware that Poland’s situation as co-host of the Euro 2012 Championship and Ukraine’s neighbour is specific. Poland cannot call for a boycott and take part in it.

The voice of Polish civil society is therefore all the more important.

Ukrainians must hear that Poland is on the side of Ukraine’s freedom and not on the side of those who are trampling that freedom. 

This is demanded by Polish tradition, Polish dignity and Polish State interests.

We call on President Yanukovych to release Yulia Tymoshenko

Boję się, że ten apel nie będzie miał żadnego bezpośredniego wpływu. Prezydent Wiktor Janukowycz wydaje się nie rozumieć współczesnego świata i polityki zagranicznej, a w jego otoczeniu, najwyraźniej przeważają jastrzębie o ograniczonych horyzontach myślowych, albo wręcz bezpośrednia agentura rosyjska, która konsekwentnie popycha Ukrainę do izolacji międzynarodowej.
Z drugiej strony apel ma kolosalne znaczenie dla społeczeństwa ukraińskiego jako przejaw solidarności i znak tego, że świat demokratyczny odwraca się od autorytarnych przywódców Ukrainy. Mnie osobiście brakuje w tym apelu, i w ogóle zachodnich wypowiedziach o Ukrainie, że sprawa Tymoszenko jest tylko czubkiem góry lodowej, pierwszą pozycją na liście rozmaitych naruszeń i nadużyć, do jakich doszło na Ukrainie w ciągu dwóch lat prezydentury Wiktora Janukowycza. Uwolnienie Julii Tymoszenko jest ważną sprawą, ale tylko jako pierwszy krok do rozwiązania problemów z wolnością słowa, zgromadzeń, wolnymi wyborami i ogólnie rządami prawa w kraju, w którym wciąż króluje bezprawie.
